Microsoft’s Windows 7 development chief, Steven Sinofsky, reveals that Windows 7 will be a further evolution of Vista, and will lose the rumored MinWin kernel.
“We’re very clear that drivers and software that work on Windows Vista are going to work really well on Windows 7; in fact, they’ll work the same. We’re going to not introduce additional compatibilities, particularly in the driver model. Windows Vista was about improving those things. We are going to build on the success and the strength of the Windows Server 2008 kernel, and that has all of this work that you’ve been talking about. The key there is that the kernel in Windows Server 08 is an evolution of the kernel in Windows Vista, and then Windows 7 will be a further evolution of that kernel as well.”
Sigh! Just when I thought they d have learnt their lesson. Just when I was anticipating the new Windows version again.. They scratch the one thing that made it potentially good. They scratched the modular kernel plans & are keeping the existing Monolithical kernel! In laymans terms. Instead of having a small and customisable piece of code at the base of the system, requiring a minimum of memory to run .. they re going to keep using the huge, memory hogging piece of garbage they started writing all those years ago. And this contrary to all modern programming principles, where everything is modular for maintainability and optimisation! Most of the Windows software written today has better code than the OS it runs on! The sad state of ..
Will they NEVER learn? Or even TRY?? Another open goal for linux, I guess :/

Sometimes, we just have to use Windows, for all sorts of reasons & thank god for virtualisation & even more so for virtualbox! Seamless mode is plain impressive!

Now, in doing so, I experienced – once again – WHY I stopped using the Windows! I was preparing a script on Ubuntu to run trough the XP machine, when suddenly – the bitch rebooted. Windows had Updated & although I had forbidden it several times earlier.. it decided my opinion didnt matter enough and .. Rebooted! The sodden bastards! Several open connections to remote servers, all lost. This could have cost me a lot of work! Luckilly I didnt trust windows as far as I could throw it & .. not without reason apparently! *sigh*
It took the time to write this post to finish the updating. (I did have the screenshot ready since yesterday) Another X minutes of my life, waiting for windows to allow me to continue working.. Bastards! Thank Linux Virtual XP starts as quick as it does!
Edit: He s doing it AGAIN! if I dont watch out, he ll reboot AGAIN!!! Updates ready, reboot required, rebooting in 2 minutes .. angst – ANGST

I went trough the standard Ubuntu repos tonight to find some cool games & though I didnt expect Much, I am happily surprised!!
In the league First Person Shooters, I found 3 nice games..
Warshow
Alien Arena
Open Arena
And to be honest, most fun so far was Open Arena! They really truthfully recreated Quake 3 Arena and I love how it feels! Great clone
I think I’ll have a lot of fun with this one
Next up is to persuade some coleagues
The biggest surprise of all, however, is in the RTS genre
Warzone 2100
A real surprise! The game has a nice and enjoyable flow & just feels .. right! It takes a bit getting used to in the interface concept, but even there, it feels Fresh and Right!
Again, I’ll have to persuade some people to play this
